PHOTOS OF THE PEOPLE AND CULTURE
OF THE TURKS AND CAICOS

Plantation era ruin, Middle Caicos.  Many of the plantation houses, sheds, and slave quarters
built by British loyalist refugees fleeing the American Revolution are still in use today.

Marcus Forbes and his current masterpiece.  Only a few of the islands' older residents still
make fishing boats by hand, using the knowledge of local materials and craftsmanship
that has been handed down for nearly 200 years.

The ubiquitous Turks and Caicos potcake dog.  They all look more or less the same, since they're
all descended from a small population the British brought with them centuries ago.

Danny Forbes, right, and his cousin Dennis.  Forbes is a very common surname on Middle Caicos.
It was "inherited" from the anglo Forbes family who owned the slave ancestors of the
island's current residents.
